DESCRIPTION

COURSE OVERVIEW AND OBJECTIVES

 

Building on the fundamental skills from Safety One’s Authorized (Standard) and Competent Safety & Advanced Rescue Certifications, the third day of training prepares experienced classroom leaders to deliver the Safety One Authorized or Competent Safety & Rescue Program.

Participants in our Train-the-Trainer program will gain the technical knowledge, skills, and support required to be an effective fall protection trainer. Additionally, they will learn the theory behind effective adult education sessions including: classroom setup, classroom management, delivering material in a clear manner and catering their message to different learning styles.

Successful candidates will leave with tips for effective site inspections, appropriate training structures and development of a fall protection program, conducting hands-on training, testing, and evaluation under controlled conditions.

Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive a wallet card and certificate from Safety One, and will be able to:

  • Teach students to properly inspect and use fall protection equipment
  • Effectively communicate fall protection techniques, regulations and standards related to course material
  • Set up various types of safety systems for training
  • Demonstrate, lead and provide feedback on effective rescue techniques
  • Adapt when different scenarios arise in the field

Job Safety Analysis (JSA)

  • Job Hazards Assessment and necessary hazard mitigation

Tower Climbing

  • Proper techniques, industry best practice, and tips for avoiding injury

Tower Rescue

  • Procedures, equipment, and suspension trauma
  • Controlled descent
  • Self-rescue and co-worker rescue

  • Set-up and execution of cross haul and lowering systems

AUDIENCE

 

This program was developed with industry experts in Fall Protection and is relevant for Supervisory personnel who are responsible for delivering fall protection training including:

  • Experienced climbers tasked with educating new climbers
  • Lead tower hands
  • Crew foremen
  • Safety representatives
  • In-house training professionals

OSHA requires fall protection training for ALL workers exposed to an unguarded edge which is 6 feet or more above a lower level. Upon successful completion of this program the certified in-house trainer will be able to incorporate Safety One’s Fall Protection training program into their Employer’s existing safety program and complete training at times and locations that are convenient to them!

PREREQUISITES FOR THIS COURSE

 

Successful completion of Safety One’s Authorized (Standard) Fall Protection Safety & Rescue, Competent Fall Protection Safety & Advanced Rescue, which can be completed immediately prior to participation in this course. This course requires the physical ability to climb and demonstrate skills at an elevated position; healthy respect of heights is encouraged. Documented experience in a related field and adult education is strongly encouraged.

A substantial portion of the Standard Fall Protection Safety & Rescue Certification training covers OSHA certification topics such as:

• Fall protection concepts and specific safety equipment

OUTLINE FOR THIS COURSE

 

Classroom Training

 

Class will begin with discussion of adult learning as it applies to fall protection and tower climbing operations. Including tailoring your message to different learning styles and classroom management. Expectations for in-house trainers will be set and the process for completing training sessions discussed. Students will learn how to properly conduct site inspection and identify recognized hazards including; electrical, dishes, antennas, fences, wildlife, insects, weather, experience, equipment capabilities and personal limitations as they relate to adult education.

Students will learn how and why it is important to tailor their message to the audience they’re working with. They will learn to conduct effective training based on the equipment available and understand how to develop and maintain an effective agenda including guidelines for developing training schedules and achieving goals with guidelines.

After the adult learning session, students will be allowed time to prepare for and expected to deliver at least one section from Safety One’s Authorized (Standard) Safety & Rescue Program or Safety One’s Competent Safety & Rescue program. During their presentation a Safety One instructor will evaluate the student’s ability to effectively deliver material, discuss relevant regulations and provide constructive feedback to ensure success.

Field Training

Field training will begin with a Job Safety Analysis after which students will conduct a training session guided by a Safety One Instructor. This session will be interactive and is designed to evaluate the Train-the-Trainer student and provide relevant feedback on common opportunities for improvement.

Students must demonstrate competency in situational awareness as it applies to conducting training at height. Successful students will be evaluated on their ability to:

  • Successfully set clear classroom expectations
  • Conduct and document a job briefing/job safety analysis
  • Complete necessary equipment inspections
  • Use appropriate PPE and insure a proper fit for all participants
  • Maintain control of all students and monitor safety systems at all times
  • Properly demonstrate use of; lifelines, belay systems, connections, anchors and rescue systems
  • Establish appropriate communication between students and instructors
  • Manage time effectively to maximize student retention

The day will conclude with

  • Final thoughts, comments, or concerns and an open question and answer session
  • Review of the session and critique from instructors and peers

COURSE MATERIALS

 

Upon successful completion, students will receive the Safety One Train-the-Trainer Fall Protection Safety & Rescue Student Manual.

Successful Student trainers will also receive the necessary training materials for use in their employer’s existing safety training program including the necessary PowerPoint presentation, applicable videos, evaluation sheets and any additional items.
